Everyday, Training Services staff members are hard at work providing Penn Staters with high-quality professional development and training opportunities. But it’s not always obvious who’s working behind the scenes to make these opportunities a reality. As part of a series of Q&As with Training Services staff members, we sat down with Blake Ferchalk to learn more about his roles, responsibilities, and projects in the group.
Q: What’s your job title?
A: Documentation specialist
Q: What are your roles and responsibilities in the group?
A: I am involved in reviewing and evaluating training resources (print, web, etc.); applying quality control and revision processes to those resources; developing new resources; and leading and participating in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of internal workflows, processes, and policies for Training Services.
Q: Where are you from?
A: Somerset, Pennsylvania
Q: What were you doing before joining Training Services?
A: I was part of the service delivery group in Services and Solutions, working on service designs as well as service and service management-based processes.
Q: What training do you recommend all (or many) Penn State faculty and staff members take?
A: Accessibility is an important consideration for anyone producing content at the University, so a great class to help understand how to approach accessibility in documentation is the Training Services class “Accessibility: Optimizing Word and PowerPoint Files.”
Q: Do you have any interesting projects you’re working on in Training Services?
A: I have been working on a redesign of the training development process, including revisions of the process workflow and sub-processes, as well as revision and development of supporting templates, resources, and guidelines for the processes.
Q: In your personal life, what’s something on your bucket list?
A: To see a Shakespearean production at the Globe Theater in London, England.
